A player with one explosive sprint capability but poor recovery isn’t faster in tennis terms than a player with slightly lower peak speed who can repeat it consistently.

In a typical tennis match, a player performs a high-intensity effort—explosive acceleration to cover the court, rapid movement and direction changes—for roughly 5–15 seconds (one or two points), then recovers for 20–30 seconds (changeover, between points). This pattern repeats dozens of times per set. Endurance training that doesn’t reflect this structure doesn’t prepare the body effectively.
