Rotational Power: The Cricket-Specific Power Quality

Most strength training programs emphasise forward-backward movement—squats, deadlifts, chest presses. These are valuable for cricket.

But cricket batting is fundamentally a rotational movement. Your power comes from rotating your core explosively, not from moving linearly forward.

During pre-season (the weeks immediately before season starts), conditioning emphasises power maintenance and sport-specific conditioning. You’re not trying to build new power; you’re sharpening what you’ve developed during off-season. Training frequency might stay at 2–3 sessions per week, but sessions are shorter and less intense.

During season, when matches are regular, conditioning becomes maintenance. Most cricketers train 1–2 times per week—enough to maintain the strength and power they’ve built, but not so much that they’re fatigued going into matches.
