Junior Development (ages 8–12)

At this age, we’re not building explosive young athletes yet. We’re building movement foundations. The intensity is low; the focus is on movement quality and neural development.

Growth occurs rapidly at this age, and coordination is constantly changing as limbs lengthen and proportions shift. We emphasise consistent, technically sound movement patterns rather than intensity or load. Many nine-year-olds have poor ankle stability and underdeveloped proprioception. We address this through play-based movement challenges—agility ladder work, balance beam activities, reactive stepping drills.

Junior Competitive (ages 13–17)

This is where first-step quickness training intensifies. Bodies are stronger, more stable, and capable of greater power output. We introduce single-leg strength work, controlled plyometric drills, resisted acceleration patterns, and sport-specific agility work.

The key at this stage is building a strong, balanced physical foundation. Many players rely exclusively on on-court conditioning—running the lines, doing shuttle runs, practising directional movement with a ball in hand. This addresses some movement demands, but it’s not a systematic approach to developing explosive first-step speed. Court conditioning is fatiguing work; it’s not optimal for training the nervous system and power output necessary for true acceleration development.

Some players focus on high-speed treadmill running or maximal-speed sprinting. For tennis, this is wasted effort. You’ll rarely reach maximal velocity on a tennis court. Training becomes competitive at approximately 70–80% of your maximum speed, and most movement occurs in the 0–5 metre range where first-step quickness determines your effectiveness.
