Most athletes think agility means speed. Faster movement side-to-side. Quicker feet. That’s incomplete.

True agility is the ability to change direction rapidly while maintaining control, then re-accelerate explosively. It’s the plant-and-cut movement in soccer when a winger plants their outside foot and explodes toward goal. It’s the lateral shuffle a netballer makes on defence, then the explosive acceleration to close on an attacker. It’s the direction change a cricketer makes in the field when tracking a moving ball.

Agility has three components that need training:

Movement quality and stability. The body can’t change direction safely without a stable base. A weak ankle, tight hips, or poor core control means the athlete either can’t generate force through the movement or gets injured trying. Most teenagers have never been screened for these limitations. They just train harder and hope.

Deceleration mechanics. This is where most teens fail. They accelerate well — their nervous system defaults to going fast. What they haven’t learned is how to slow down and control their body. A poor landing from a jump creates knee stress. Overstretching on a cut causes ankle sprains. A lack of deceleration power means they slide into defenders or overshoot their target.

Reactive and directional agility. Can the athlete respond to a moving target or a coach’s signal? Can they change direction based on where a defender moves or where a ball is heading? This requires a combination of decision-making speed, movement anticipation, and explosive directional control.

Without all three components, you don’t have agility. You have speed in one direction.

Why Preseason is the Critical Window

The competitive season doesn’t leave room for foundational movement development. Once games start, training shifts to maintenance and sport-specific skill work. The preseason period — those six to eight weeks before round one — is when you actually build agility capacity.

This is a nervous system and movement quality issue. The brain needs time to learn new movement patterns. Tendons and ligaments need progressive loading to adapt. If a teenager arrives at preseason unprepared and goes straight into game intensity, their injury risk explodes.

How We Build Preseason Agility for Teenagers

Our approach sits on a foundation of movement quality first, sport-specific agility second, and progressive intensity third.

Every teenager begins with a Performance Testing Session before preseason work starts. We measure 20-metre sprint performance, conduct the pro-shuttle test to assess change-of-direction quickness, assess vertical jump to measure lower-body power capacity, and screen movement patterns for imbalances or compensations. A teenager with tight hip flexors will struggle with lateral movement. One with weak glute activation won’t control deceleration. That testing reveals what the preseason program needs to prioritise.

From there, we write a preseason agility program that’s individual. A 14-year-old netball player gets a different program than a 17-year-old AFL prospect, even though both need agility development. The program reflects their age, sport, current fitness level, and what the testing revealed.

Here’s what a preseason agility session typically includes:

Dynamic warm-up and movement preparation. We’re teaching the nervous system how to move, not just elevating heart rate. Athletes practise controlled movements in multiple directions: forward, backward, lateral, diagonal. They activate stabiliser muscles that are dormant from sitting in school all day. They prep their ankles, hips, and core for the directional changes about to happen.

Agility-specific drills. This is where we get specific. Pro-shuttle repeats that teach athletes to plant their foot and accelerate in the opposite direction. Cone drills that demand multi-directional movement. T-test variations that build lateral speed and deceleration control. Ladder drills that improve foot speed and coordination. Every drill has a purpose — it’s not random cone work.

Deceleration and landing mechanics. We teach athletes to slow down under control. Box step-downs that teach eccentric strength and control. Single-leg balance progressions that build ankle stability. Plyometric landing sequences that train safe landing patterns. This work prevents injuries and creates the foundation for explosive stops and direction changes.

Sport-specific movement patterns. A soccer player’s agility needs differ from a cricketer’s. We build agility through the actual movement patterns that matter for each sport. AFL players train lateral cuts and hard stops. Netballers train vertical deceleration and multi-directional acceleration. Swimmers train pool-side agility and flip-turn mechanics. The agility principle is the same; the application is sport-specific.

Recovery and cool-down. Preseason is intense, and recovery gets overlooked by teenagers. We teach breathing techniques, stretching progressions, and trigger point therapy that accelerates recovery between sessions and between games once the season starts.

Preseason Timing and Periodisation

Preseason agility training follows a structured progression, not random intensity.

Weeks 1–2. Movement quality and baseline testing. We’re screening for limitations, establishing testing baselines, and teaching correct movement patterns. Intensity is moderate — athletes are re-learning how to move athletically after an off-season break. The focus is technique and movement quality, not speed. This foundation matters more than most teams realise.

Weeks 3–4. Progressive agility load. We’re increasing drill complexity and speed slightly. Athletes are now combining deceleration with re-acceleration. Lateral movement gets faster. Court or field-specific agility appears. Testing reveals progress. Confidence builds as athletes feel themselves moving better.

Weeks 5–6. Sport-specific agility integration. Drills now mirror actual game demands. Full-court or full-field agility patterns. Game-pace intensity starts appearing. Athletes are moving at speeds closer to what they’ll face in competition. Injury risk is actually lower at this point because movement quality is established and athletes understand their current capacity.

Week 7–8. Maintenance and transition to competition. We reduce volume slightly and shift focus to recovery and injury prevention. The agility foundation is built. Now it’s about maintaining that capacity while managing fatigue from increasing game-intensity training. By the time round one arrives, teenagers are physically prepared.

This isn’t random. It’s systematic progression based on what research shows about how nervous systems adapt to new movement demands.

Sport-Specific Agility Across Different Codes

Agility needs vary by sport, which is why preseason agility training needs sport-specific application.

AFL and rugby athletes need explosive lateral cuts and hard deceleration — planting the outside foot, changing direction sharply, and re-accelerating. Their agility work emphasises lateral movement patterns, shuttle running, and directional changes under fatigue.

Netball and basketball players need vertical deceleration and quick multi-directional acceleration. Their agility work includes lateral movement but also rapid transitions from moving laterally to moving vertically. Ankle stability gets heavy emphasis because of the demanding cut-and-plant patterns.

Soccer players need sustained agility over 90 minutes without losing control. Their preseason agility work builds endurance in directional changes, not just explosive repeats. They train acceleration and deceleration at varying speeds.

Cricket athletes need reactive agility — responding to a moving ball or unpredictable game situations. Their preseason work includes agility drills with reactive elements where the direction of movement depends on a coach’s signal or ball direction.

Track and field sprinters need lateral agility less than other sports, but they still train multi-directional movement and deceleration control to prevent injury and build overall athleticism. Their focus is acceleration mechanics and preventing imbalances that develop from specialised sprint training.

Across all these sports, the principle is identical: preseason agility training for teens must reflect what that sport actually demands. Generic agility drills get generic results.

Common Preseason Mistakes Teen Athletes Make

Most teenagers and coaches approach preseason agility work with good intentions and poor execution.

Skipping the testing and baseline phase. Teams want to get straight into intense drills. What they miss is the assessment opportunity. A teenager with poor ankle stability who jumps straight into shuttle running gets an ankle sprain. Testing reveals these limitations early.

Running volume instead of agility quality. “Preseason conditioning” often means laps and running sprints. That’s not agility training. Agility is directional change and deceleration control, not distance covered. A teenager can run all summer and still have poor change-of-direction mechanics.

Ignoring deceleration work. Athletes train acceleration naturally — the nervous system defaults to going fast. Deceleration training feels slower and less exciting. It’s also what prevents injuries. Teenagers who skip eccentric strength work and landing mechanics get hurt when they try to stop hard.

No sport-specific application. Generic agility cones scattered on a field train fitness. Sport-specific agility patterns train athleticism. A soccer player shouldn’t run the same agility drills as a netballer, even though both need agility.

Pushing too hard too soon. Preseason has a limited timeline, which creates pressure to train hard immediately. Reality: nervous system adaptation takes time. Pushing young athletes into high-intensity agility work before movement quality is established creates injury risk, not fitness.

Here’s the hard truth: most preseason agility work fails because it’s not systematic. It’s random drills, random intensity, and no measurement. Without testing before and after, you can’t prove anything improved.
