Multi-directional change of direction drills mirror actual rugby union movement. You move in multiple directions with shorter rest between changes. A pro-shuttle drill, for example, involves accelerating forward five metres, decelerating, planting, accelerating back five metres, planting, then accelerating forward 10 metres. This combines multiple deceleration points with accelerations in different directions. It’s rugby union-specific because rugby movement is multi-directional chaos.

Reactive agility drills add the decision-making element. Instead of pre-determined movement patterns, the rugby union player reacts to visual or audio cues. A coach points left, the player cuts left. A cone lights up, the player sprints toward it. A ball is bounced unpredictably, the player reacts to where it’s going. This combines physical agility with the decision-making component of rugby.

We use fewer cone drills and more movement-pattern work specific to forward positions—lateral shuffles, lateral acceleration, pivot and accelerate patterns.

The point isn’t that tight forwards don’t need agility. It’s that agility for a prop looks different than agility for a winger. It’s shorter-range, more explosive from static positions, with greater emphasis on maintaining body position and contact capability. Generic agility work is better than nothing, but rugby-specific agility drills produce better rugby outcomes.

The second mistake is neglecting deceleration training. Rugby union players often train acceleration and change of direction while ignoring the deceleration component. They get faster at accelerating into cuts but don’t improve their ability to control deceleration, which is the actual limiting factor for fast cuts. Video analysis of movement patterns is equally important. We film agility drills and game footage, then analyse plant mechanics, body angles, and efficiency. A rugby union player might have a slow pro-shuttle time because their movement pattern is inefficient, not because they lack physical ability. Video analysis shows where technical improvement is needed.

Weave and accelerate: Navigate through cones in a weaving pattern at moderate speed, then accelerate at full speed once you exit. This develops rhythm and coordination before explosive effort.

Multi-directional circuit: Set up five to six positions around a central point. Start at one position and sprint to each other position in sequence, planting and changing direction at each station. This mirrors the chaotic directional changes of rugby.

Game-situation agility: Practise specific rugby patterns—defend against a simulated attack, create separation from a defender, accelerate into a space that’s closing. These are game-relevant drills that combine agility with rugby decision-making.
